I recently watched a commercial about Yoplait Yogurt. A woman was standing at her open refrigerator door contemplating the temptation of eating a piece of chocolate cake. She began to bargain with herself. “I ate healthy today, so maybe I can treat myself to a small sliver.” “If I eat celery for lunch, I can have a bigger piece of cake because they will counterbalance each other.” “If I jog in place while I am eating the cake, I can eat the entire cake.” Sounds familiar! The commercial ends with the woman substituting the Yoplait for her “unyielding” craving.
Is Yoplait really a better alternative than a high caloric dessert? She is replacing the chocolate cake for yogurt which is less calories and fat. But, we’re missing the point here. Number 1, if you are eating a diet rich in nutrient-dense foods (vegetables, fruits, nuts and legumes) you can guilt free enjoy an occasional treat. Splurge, savor and for heaven’s sake, Stop the Bargaining.
Number 2, Yoplait Yogurt. Really! Yummy chocolate cake (possibly homemade) versus processed
(Red #40 and Blue #1..what is that?), artificial sweetener (aspartame), and fat free (thin, watery). Where is the comparison and fulfillment factor? Not even close. Sorry Yoplait. I’m going to have to give this 2 spoons down.

Great post Cindy. I always get frustrated with these kinds of commercials. You’re absolutely right – eat the best version of what you truly love and leave the artificially colored, sweetened, processed junk in the supermarket where it belongs
Thanks Heather. I really appreciate your comments. Can’t wait to see the day when manufacturers advertise nutritious fruits and vegetables rather than their unhealthy counterparts. “Eat apples, it does a body good.”
